This grand hotel was opened on December 20, 1886 by cattle baron Jesse Driskill. The lavish hotel has enjoyed several makeovers through the years, as well as several new owners. Presidents and dignitaries have stayed at the hotel when visiting Austin and it was Lyndon Baines Johnson who watched the 1964 election from the Presidential Suite and then celebrated his victory in the Grand Ballroom. It is also well known for being one of the most Haunted hotels in the United States, featuring a host of supernatural occurrences including its namesake, Colonel Driskill.
